If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you know that last year we moved to Goodyear, Arizona. We love our little community up in Estrella , it has the small-town feel, away from the hustle and bustle, and Estrella has all the amenities and events we could ever hope for. Last year right after we moved in Matt and I both got very sick, so we had to miss out on the GLMFest, but we were able to open our windows and hear the music from our bed. This year I was determined that we would go, especially after hearing that they had SmashMouth as the headliner.
Of course I’d want to go to a free festival and I can walk to from my house, that is playing all my favorite genres of music: Country, Reggae, and 90s music. Our beautiful lake is the perfect spot to hold such a festival, it’s the perfect backdrop to hold a great event. I was curious to see how many people were going to venture “up the hill” to come to our festival, but when I heard them advertising it on the radio, I knew it was going to be big. I was not expecting it was going to be 9,000 people big (estimate taken from our newsletter)!
The day before the festival I had come down with a bad cold. So, I took all the homeopathic things I could to kick that cold to the curb because nothing, not a cold, not 100-degree weather, would keep me from rocking out to the music I loved growing up. Well the heat and my cold did not mix but luckily SmashMouth was the last to perform and they took the stage after sunset.
Since the City of Goodyear had predicted a big turn out, there were plenty of traffic controlling areas which made it a breeze for us to walk to the event. For people who had a further commute, there was free parking at the high school and a shuttle to the event. I loved how everyone was able to hang out on the grass and hills to find the best spots for them. My husband and I went to go check out the beer and wine garden which was right next to the stage. SCORE! Since we had such great spots, we decided just to hang out there. My favorite part about our Estrella community is that we have food truck nights every month so I was excited to check out the food trucks we had for GLMFest. There were 6 trucks and only 3 ran out of food, not bad for having 9,000 people over 5 hours! My favorite was our local resident’s Acaí bowls, Nourish Superfood Bowls! I had a mix of the activated charcoal and the pitaya with all the toppings except for granola due to my gluten sensitivity and it was seriously the best way to cool down from the heat. I love supporting local businesses and the owner Reyna is just the sweetest! If you are local to EMR she delivers!! Follow her on facebook and instagram.
I was very impressed with how the City of Goodyear handled the whole event, the only complaint I had was there were not enough port-a-potties for the amount of people. I had a blast rocking out to the songs I loved growing up with and being able to be so close to home. I can’t wait to see who the headliner is next year! And thank you for Estrella for sponsoring this post, all opinions and experiences are my own.
